Definition of Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is when two people get into an intimate relationship and one person uses a pattern of coercion and control against the other person during the relationship and/or after the relationship has terminated. It often includes physical, sexual, emotional, or economic abuse.

• “Magistrate Protocol for Domestic Violence Cases: Guidelines with Emphasis on Issues Related to Children” -- NEW
  
  Protocol prepared by the Child Well-Being and Domestic Violence Project and Prevent Child Abuse NC, October 2005.
  
  NCCADV did not participate on the Advisory Committee for this Project and does not fully endorse the contents therein because of the following concerns:
  
  1. The primary focus of this protocol is on domestic violence cases involving children rather than on all cases of domestic violence as the final report of the Task Force recommended; and
  
  2. The protocol encourages magistrates to report every case involving children to the Department of Social Services which is broader than the mandatory reporting law in NC and most likely will result in victims reporting even fewer cases because of the fear of losing their children which may decrease safety for victims and children.
