Legal Advocacy and Empowerment Project

The North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and WomensLaw.org entered into a partnership in 2008 to create the Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Project. The purpose of this project is to empower victims of domestic violence throughout North Carolina with legal information, trained representation and support. The year 2010 marked the beginning of a new and exciting phase of the project as a result of the merger of WomensLaw.org’s and the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV). This merger has connected the project even more closely with other national and state-wide efforts to end domestic violence.

Another exciting aspect of the Legal Empowerment and Advocacy Project is the coordination of the Domestic Violence Pro Bono Alliance. The goal of the project is to recruit a pool of pro bono attorneys to take two domestic violence cases per year. Two free CLE trainings were conducted in 2010 to over 70 attorneys that addressed the representation of domestic violence victims in protective order hearings. The first training was possible due to the partnership with the law offices of Womble Carlyle. In May, NCCADV honored Tripp Greason, Womble Carlyle’s Pro Bono Director, who has been a key partner in the success of the Domestic Violence Pro Bono Alliance.

Finally, the Legal Empowerment and Advocacy project responded to 763 e-mail hotline requests for legal information from survivors, family members, and advocates from across the state through the WomensLaw.org website. The project also worked to enhance the legal information on the NC pages of WomensLaw.org. In 2010, content was added and updated in the areas of confidentiality, workplace protections, and domestic violence crimes. In addition, the website was updated with legislative changes from the 2010 session, as well as resource listings for lawyers, shelters, advocates, courthouses and sheriff’s departments for all of North Carolina.
